The Florida Gamma Chapter was established at the University of South Florida on February 16, 1974. The first initiation class consisted of 120 members, including students, eminent engineers, and alumni from years past.
The USF chapter was the third established in the state of Florida-- hence the "Gamma" in Florida Gamma from the third letter in the Greek alphabet. USF's chapter was the 149th founded in the United States.
The purpose of the Tau Beta Pi organization is to recognize outstanding engineering students and to foster a spirit of liberal culture through service to the chapter, the college, and the community.
